Your New Favorite Cheese: Reiqueijão Cremoso

Reiqueijão cremoso was introduced to me my freshman year of college. My friend living down the hall in the dorms was a Brazilian girl who used to keep this salty, tangy yet mild and creamy cheese in her fridge at all times. We would go out clubbing together and come back to her room wanting a little late night nosh – so we’d toast some bread (strictly against the school’s ‘no toaster’ policy) and spread on the gooey goodness. Since those days, it has been consistently among my favorite cheeses.

About a year and a half ago, I went on a hunt to find reiqueijão cremoso in NYC, but my search came out with only paltry results. I learned that not one shop in Little Brazil carried it; instead I would have to go all the way to Flushing to purchase some. I was deeply disappointed. But then recently I was pleasantly surprised. I went to my local Associated grocery store and, lo and behold, it was being sold to the masses right in the regular cheese section! The brand sold there was Catupiry – one of the most popular brands of this cheese. Definitely check it out next time you head to the grocery store. This cheese is extremely versatile and its dip-able consistency lends itself to easy snacking. My favorite way to eat it is to spread it on an english muffin, top with a slice of tomato and a fried or poached egg, and season with salt and pepper. But go ahead…get creative!
